Open Door Family Medical Center is a placement site for CHCANYS Public Health AmeriCorps, with its mission to increase health care access and enhance workforce development through service in community health centers throughout New York State, and the goal of eliminating health disparities for the medically underserved though long-lasting sustainable projects.

At Open Door, AmeriCorps Members provide direct service to patients and the community to help fill service gaps, increase access to health care services, and improve utilization of health services. They receive extensive professional development, training opportunities, and exposure to careers in public health and medicine. This first-hand experience in health service delivery prepares AmeriCorps members for careers in public health and community-based primary health care

Available Positions

Community Health AmeriCorps Member

These AmeriCorps Members will coordinate support services/programs that address social determinants of health which have a direct effect on the well-being and health outcomes of patients and communities. Specific services/programs include Baby Bundle, Baby Bank, Digital Literacy, Patient Advocacy/Navigation

Wellness AmeriCorps Member

These AmeriCorps Members will coordinate and support the group exercise program which offers in-person and virtual exercise classes (e.g. ZUMBA®, Yoga, Pilates, Circuit)to patients in our Wellness Centers, located in the Ossining and Port Chester health centers, and will support Wellness/Nutrition/WIC staff in the delivery of evidence-based programs that focus on promoting wellness, physical activity, and nutrition for patients of all ages.  

Application Requirements:

Minimum eligibility requirements for Open Door’s Healthy Future Corps program include:

  • High School diploma or GED required. College degree preferred
  • US citizen, national or lawful permanent resident
  • Ability to commit to an 11-month service term
  • Interest in public health care and community service
  • Culturally competent/sensitive (racial, ethnic, linguistic, LGBTQ+, physical ability, etc.) and committed to inclusive, multi-cultural programming
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Fluent or advanced spoken Spanish

Benefits: CHCANYS Public Health AmeriCorps members receive a Living Allowance of $27,000, in addition to other benefits including transportation expenses and health insurance. Members also receive extensive Public Health training and professional development and an Education Award of $6,895 at the successful completion of their term.
